Norjee – Mitta Mitta 130 miles

13/7

Another wet and windy night, so great to be indoors with our warm showers hosts. The cycling today was flat with a strong tail wind but otherwise damp and uneventful. Finished the day in the dark but found a great campsite and were the only ones there so made ourselves fully at home, avoiding the rain under cover with a log fire.

Cooked a fat breakfast and headed off towards the mountains. The climbing started straight away but the weather was good and it wasn’t too tough.

Towards the end of the day the wind picked up and there was a bit of ice on the road. By the time we got to Omeo it was freezing and getting dark so treated ourselves to a caravan.

Woke up at 5 to a freezing caravan so turned on the heater and nodded off. When I got up at half 6 it was even colder, turns out I had turned on the air conditioning and made the caravan into a little fridge.

Hands down the best cycling we’ve had so far. A nice sunny morning and then after biggest climb of my life we crossed the snow line.

It was really hot on the way up, but as soon as the pedals stopped moving the cold came in.

We had lunch standing in the road because there wasn’t really anywhere either side that didn’t involve stomping through snow. Had to push the bikes through the bad bits but eventually lost some altitude and then had a huge downhill to Mitta Mitta where we had another campsite to ourselves. In all it was 6,500ft of climbing and 7,900ft of downhill.

  1. Epic climb through the snow, you must have loved the drop back down. Did you burn your initials into the campsite hut panelling, to join the others…..
