Princetown – Melborne 180 miles

5/7

Woke up to wet tents so had a couple of cups of coffee and sent he drone up in the hope that they would dry a bit in the meantime.

Did the first major stint of the Great Ocean Road and it’s large! Surprisingly we haven’t been by the ocean much at all but have been through some mountains. It’s pretty hard on the legs but interesting and sunny riding.

Booked into a camp site and had a quick swim. Sadly whilst cooking pizzas I managed to set fire to the oven and then dropped mine face down so had a gritty dinner.

We had a costal day! Still hilly but the views were beaut. Had coffee in a cafe full of cyclists and some middle age bloke with a really nice bike was condescending and annoying and I was politely having none of it. Ended up cycling full pelt for the next 10 miles in an unofficial race and I had him! Even managed to start an apple and compose myself by the time he caught up at he end.

The downside of this competitive streak is that the legs were ruined and it was significantly slower going for the rest of the day.

Had a nice beach picnic then plodded on to Torquay.

It has been an eventful night. Yesterday evening we saw a possum sitting in a tree near our tents. They’re nocturnal and look like creepy lemurs. Jack warned me to keep food in my tent. However, the food bag is enormous and I didn’t fancy spooning it, so I zipped it into my porch and nodded off. At 2 am I was woken by a creature moving around in my porch, leaning into my door. If you don’t camp it was like a small dog leaning on a tight blind. In my surprise and not wanting to have my food stolen I gave the invader a good whack through the tent. I was pretty sure it ran off, but when you’re zipped in a sleeping bag in a tent you feel quite vulnerable and the prospect of opening the door to an angry possum is quite scary. To ensure it had gone I proceeded to growl and made angry cat noises until I was sure it had left and I could check on the food.

The rest of the day was a bit breezy but smashed a maccies and had lunch in a park before some pretty good cycle paths into Melborne.

Got to the hostel at 3 ish. After some serious negotiations got the bikes in too, then mooched around town.

Melborne is so much fun! We ended up staying for a few days to avoid a storm and soak up the sights. Highlights include wild urban penguins, boris bikes, Chinese food, free trams and air B and B discount codes.
