Madura Pass – Head of the Bight 161 miles

17/6

We saw the sea for the first time, hit 1000 miles, crossed another time zone and crossed the WA/SA boarder all in the space of a couple of miles so ticked a few boxes today.

But apart from the excitements in terms of mile stones, the cycling has been drizzly and pretty dull. We’ve made camp and cooking in the tent as the weather is on a mad one.

Unfortunately the lack of food has lead to serious rationing and breakfast was two slices of bread and peanut butter. The weather has cleared up though.

A few hours in we met a lovely lady called Welma on some cliffs. She ended up giving us some pineapple, banana bread and dates. It was the first fruit we’d had in over a week and was incredible!

After that there was about 40 miles of barron scrub a lot until we saw 3 wild emus!!!! Didn’t manage to get a picture but still pretty nuts. After the emu’s we headed to the Head of Bight where apparently a load of whales go to have babies at this time of year.

We didn’t know if we’d see any and it was 25k off route but wandering to the cliffs we saw a whale bobbing in the sea and over the next 20 mins we saw 3 more!

Currently writing this on a sandy hill in my tent reminessing on how great Welma was.

    1. Have just worked out how to follow your blog Mark – amazing progress and I can see that planning enough food etc must be really difficult given the remoteness. Keep strong!
