Caiguna – Madura pass 191 miles

15/5

We’ve been seeing all the kangaroos! We saw the first one right after leaving camp at Caiguna the day before yesterday, and over the next 70 or so miles they were all over the shop. I measured a troop hopping along and they were cruising at 22mph!

Later we hit our first time zone and whacked the watches 45 mins ahead.

The day ended going down the Madura pass which was the first proper hill we have seen in about 5 days. Hit 41mph and are now camping on the flat. We did our first century of 102 miles.

We also saw a blind eagle in a cage behind a BP garage.

When we left camp in the morning there were kangaroos all over the road.

The next few hours of cycling were pretty dull until we passed a road kill kangaroo that had a Joey in its pocket. Morbid curiosity took over and when I went for a closer look the joey blinked at me. The poor little dude looked so helpless sitting in its dead mums pouch.

After a bit of gentle jimmying I got him out of the pouch and he was very much alive, ruling out a speedy dispatch of a half dead orphan. Instead he was wrapped in the only thing to hand (a high viz jacket) and we flagged down a couple of Aussie campers who wrapped him in a blanket and took him on their way.

I gave them my contact details and the following day they got in touch saying he was actually a she and was in safe hands in Ceduna. A massive relief and a happy end to a sad story as little Nulla lives on.

The rest of the day was incredibly boring but ended another good camping spot and made decent ground. Should cross the WA/SA border and hit another time zone at about lunch tomorrow.

On another wildlife note we saw a cat eating a dead kangaroo, didn’t manage to get a picture but after a quick google it turns out to be a feral domestic cat. Bit of a contrast to English moggies…
